History
Hosting the 1988 Winter Olympics, Pengrowth
Saddledome, originally named Olympic Saddledome
has made a name for itself with hockey fans
around the world. The Saddledome opened its
doors in 1983, and was the first hockey stadium
in North America that accommodated
international-sized rinks. With its unique
saddle-shaped roof, this stadium is apparent in
the skyline of Calgary. The roof, which has 122
meter span but only 60 centimeters thick, was
constructed with pre-cast concrete panels
suspended by post-tension cables, which creates
the sloping in the middle.
Located minutes from downtown, the Pengrowth
Saddledome is Calgary’s premiere entertainment
center, and with 6,000 acoustic tiles attached
to the roof, it provides a greater sound when
concerts are held.
In addition to the Calgary Flames, the
Saddledome is the home to the Calgary Hitmen of
the Western Hockey League, and the Calgary
Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League.
